The System’s Less Rigged than You Think It Is

“The system isn’t as rigged as you think, and it certainly is not as hopeless as you think.”

Barack Obama, Rutgers University commencement address, May 15, 2016.

To the tune of “What Kind of Fool Do You Think I Am” by Lee Roy Parnell.

You look at the ballots and you don’t see a choice.
You watch the TV and you don’t hear your voice.
I know they might treat you like you’re just a dope,
But I’m here to tell you that you shouldn’t lose hope.

It’s not as rigged as you think it is.
It’s just the way of our politics biz.
You’ve got to keep thinking there’s a way you can win.
The system’s less rigged than you think it is.

So you voted for me because you hated war,
But with drones and a surge, I just gave you more.
So with your vote, what did you gain?
You kept all that power away from McCain.

It’s not as rigged as you think it is.
It’s just the way of our politics biz.
You’ve got to keep thinking there’s a way you can win.
The system’s less rigged than you think it is.

Though casting a vote just brought you sorrow,
Don’t give up hope; there’s always tomorrow.

You looked at the ballots and you didn’t see a choice.
You watched the TV and you didn’t hear your voice.
They treated you often like you were a dope,
But go out in the world and never lose hope.

It’s not as rigged as you think it is.
It’s just the way of our politics biz.
You’ve got to keep thinking there’s a way you can win.
The system’s less rigged than you think it is.

It’s not as rigged as you think it is.
It’s just the way of our politics biz.
You’ve got to keep thinking there’s a way you can win.
The system’s less rigged than you think it is.
